Presentation of the Functional Literacy Center

Program and levels

At the Functional Literacy Center of CJARC, programs are structured progressively and tailored to the realities of blind and visually impaired individuals. They aim to impart essential skills for an autonomous, active, and socially integrated life.

1.Initiation Level

This first level is intended for learners who have never been to school or who have significant difficulties in reading and writing. It includes:

  • Learning the Braille and/or black alphabet (depending on visual profile)
  • Basic concepts of arithmetic (numbering, basic operations)
  • The basics of orientation and mobility
  • Awareness of personal hygiene and community living

2. Elementary Level

This level reinforces basic knowledge and introduces functional skills:

  • Fluent reading and writing (in Braille and/or print)
  • Applied arithmetic for daily life (budget management, measurement, time)
  • Oral expression and comprehension of simple texts
  • Introduction to autonomous living techniques (cooking, travel, etc.)

3.Consolidation Level

At this level, the goal is to prepare learners for vocational training or better socio-professional integration:

  • Writing simple letters, understanding administrative documents
  • Solving practical problems
  • Introduction to adapted computer skills (screen reading, Braille or keyboard input)
  • Strengthening social and communication skills

Our programs are designed with an inclusive approach, taking into account the individual needs of each learner while promoting mutual aid and active participation. Through each level, the Center is committed to making literacy a true lever for autonomy and dignity.
