Presentation of the Functional Literacy Center
Methods and Materials
At the Functional Literacy Center of CJARC, the pedagogical approach is based on active, inclusive methods adapted to the specific needs of blind and visually impaired individuals. Our priority is to ensure effective knowledge transfer while respecting the pace, profile, and abilities of each learner.
Pedagogical Methods
- Individualized Teaching: Each learner receives personalized support, with objectives defined according to their initial level, abilities, and life project.
- Learning through Practice: Concepts are approached through concrete situations from daily life to reinforce the usefulness and retention of learning.
- Participatory Method: Learners are encouraged to express themselves, share their experiences, and learn from each other in a supportive group dynamic.
- Multi-sensory Approach: Teaching engages the senses of touch, hearing, and smell to compensate for visual impairment and facilitate understanding.
Adapted Teaching Materials
- Braille Materials: Books, writing boards, exercise sheets, and school manuals transcribed into Braille.
- Tactile Tools and Educational Objects: Boards, geometric shapes, clocks, and tactile models to illustrate abstract concepts.
- Audio Materials: Recorded lessons, audiobooks, and voice reading devices to enhance memorization and autonomy.
- Adapted Technologies: Computers with screen reading software (JAWS, NVDA), Braille keyboards, Perkins machines, dictaphones, etc.
- Enlarged Visual Supports: For the visually impaired, we offer large-print documents and electronic magnifiers.
Through these methods and tools, the Center provides a stimulating, accessible learning environment that respects the dignity of each learner. The goal is to make literacy a means of personal and social transformation, opening new perspectives for autonomy and inclusion.
